What is a Choice Mom?
A Choice Mom is a woman who proactively and conscientiously decided to become a single mother. She chose to adopt or conceive a child before, or instead of, finding a lifetime partner. Also known as single mother by choice. Q: How many women make this choice? A: My count is that today roughly 50,000 women choose single motherhood each year. The census takers don’t collect this data, but I based this number on the fact that a recent U.S. Census report indicated that more than 100,000 unmarried women above the age of 30 gave birth during the previous year. An estimated half of those are cohabiting women who simply are not married, which gives us 50,000 who do not have a partner and are old enough to know how birth control works. Even if that number seems generous, consider that current industry trends indicate that at least one-quarter of the 125,000 adoptions each year involve single women, which is not included in this data.
