What is a Certified Center?

Certified Collection Centers are used oil collection facilities that have applied and been certified by the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB). These centers collect oil at no charge and pay 16¢/gallon to people bringing in used oil for recycling. Additionally, these centers advertise their ability to collect used oil from the public. By offering the 16¢/gallon incentive to do-it-yourselfers (individuals who change their own oil) the CIWMB is hoping more used oil is recycled and less used oil is disposed improperly (such as in a dumpster or the ground). In certifying centers, the CIWMB is able to track success of the used oil recycling programs that occur throughout the state.
