What is a Certificate of Registration?
If the mark is published based upon the actual use of the mark in commerce, or on a foreign registration, and no party files an opposition or request to extend the time to oppose, the USPTO will register the mark and issue a registration certificate about twelve (12) weeks after the date the mark was published.
In most countries, territories or states official government bodies exist whose responsibility it is to licence businesses (firms) or companies (corporations) to conduct commercial trading. In Australia, for example the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) licences companies and state-based government agencies licence businesses eg. sole traders or partnerships. Any of these agencies should be able to provide you (if they have not already done so) with an official registration certificate typically showing the date, your orgsanisation’s name and a registration number. You will always be required to such a document to Melbourne IT along with your application for a Digital Certificate.
When a trademark is registered on the Principal Register, the Patent and Trademark Office issues a certificate of registration to the mark’s owner. This certificate contains, among other things, a reproduction of the mark, the date the mark was first used in commerce, a listing of the goods and services which the mark is registered for use with, the registration date and the registration number.
