What is a Certificate of Recognition?
A Certificate of Recognition (COR) is given to employers who develop health and safety programs that meet established standards. Certificates for the Alberta construction industry are issued by the Alberta Construction Safety Association and are co-signed by Alberta Human Resources and Employment. The Health and Safety Certificate of Recognition (COR) is the foundation of the Partners Program, and is awarded to employers who implement and maintain an occupational health and safety management system that exceeds regulatory requirements. After achieving the Health and Safety COR, the Injury Management/Return-to-Work COR recognizes employers for proactive return-to-work programs. CORs are earned by employers who successfully meet a set of audit standards.

Achieving and maintaining a valid COR is required for earning a financial incentive through the Partners in Injury Reduction program. Also, it is not unusual for Alberta corporations to expect contractors bidding on projects to hold a valid COR.
• The Certificate of Recognition is awarded to companies that have achieved safety excellence by developing and implementing an effective Occupational Health & Safety Program (or System) within their organization. • To receive a Certificate of Recognition a company requires commitment to occupational health and safety. The commitment extends past the slogan “Safety First” and deals with creating an atmosphere conducive to “Safety First”. Components within a Occupational Health & Safety System include, but are not limited to: • WCB and LTD Management • First Aid • Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee • Training • Industrial Hygiene • Required elements outlined in Section 28 of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act.
