What is a certificate of occupancy permit?
In addition to the business license required for all businesses operating within the City, a Certificate of Occupancy must be obtained from the Building & Safety Department in order for a business to occupy a commercial building. Building & Safety reviews the Certificate of Occupancy application for conformance to the approved building occupancy plan including an onsite inspection after the space is occupied. In existing buildings the process is an ongoing review of building occupants.
A certificate of occupancy is a document that is produced by the Building Official after completion of most new construction and if there is a change in occupancy type (as defined in the Building Code) within an existing structure. (Exception: New single-family homes and residential garages and storage buildings.
