What is a Certificate of Insurance, and why is it necessary?

If your project involves working with a nonprofit organization or school in the United States, you should obtain a certificate of insurance if possible. The agency’s liability insurance provider generates this document, and generally the agency’s business manager will provide you with that form. A sample copy of this form is available by request. The certificate of insurance ensures that if the agency with whom you are serving or your project cause damage, harm or injury, you, your family, and the college are protected from financial liability for the loss. It also states that if you are injured while doing your project, the agency’s insurance will cover your losses. Obtaining this form does not create any increased insurance cost for the agency.
