What is a carriage clock, and why would I want one?
Two great questions. Let me answer them for you. – What is a carriage clock? Carriage clocks came into existence in the 19th century, when people traveled by carriage…hence the name. These small clocks were designed for travel, and had to stand up to some rigorous conditions. One of the characteristics of carriage clocks is their case – usually made from polished brass or another bright metal. The face of these small clocks is covered in glass, to protect the clocks hands. These magnificent little clocks originally had a spring-driven mechanism. Modern versions of the carriage clocks make use of quartz movement, and instead of springs and gears, they’re powered by batteries. Another common feature of carriage clocks is the fact that they almost always have a handle, used for carrying them when traveling.
