What is a carburetor backfire flame arrestor?
We’ve all seen it, or even had it happen to us: we turn off the car’s ignition switch and it tries to continue to run, perhaps backfiring and startling us. We don’t think about it much since nothing really happens–because the backfire is trapped in the metal air cleaner sitting atop the carburetor. On a gasoline-powered boat, though, that backfire may represent the beginning of a nightmare: fire at sea.
