What is a Cam (or timing) belt, and why should I change it?

A. Approximately 70% of vehicles produced have a rubber toothed belt connecting the engine crankshaft to the camshaft driving the valve train. It is hidden behind covers at the front of the engine and carries a high engine load. Should it break, severe engine damage may result. It is therefore essential that it be changed at, or before, the interval recommended by the manufacturer in order to avoid costly repairs. This period may vary anywhere from 50,000 Kms to 150,000 Kms and is noted in your owner’s manual. If unsure, ask one of our staff.
