A Buddy Breather, or Emergency Airline System (EAS), allows a second person (your buddy) to connect to your SCBA if his should fail or run out of air. This is only used in an emergency to escape an Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) environment. SCBAs with EAS are approved by NIOSH, but because the time duration is cut in half, it voids the NIOSH approval while in use.
