What is a brownstone window?
Brownstones are urban townhomes made of a sandstone material composed of sand-sized minerals or rock grains. These materials are clad in a brick, stucco, or a concrete derivative; then molded and colored creating an elegant stone sheath effect.
Many architectural elements constitute a Brownstone townhome. However, the feature attraction is its set of oriel bow front, or bay windows. The windows were created as a distinguishing feature to separate each individual townhome from its similar neighboring structure. Therefore, each set of windows are uniquely shaped and surrounded by various cornice designs.
Brownstone windows are either paired, elongated or bay; and sometimes have sills, shutters or small balconies. Some homes offer a stoop next to the windows; and others offer the same stoop, but connected to a set of corridor doors for easy accessibility to the outside world.
These curved, oversized bow front or bay shaped windows provide an abundant supply of light. Energy-efficient window panes are optional. Since the windows are the main distinguishing factor when it comes to a brownstone townhome, builders sometimes trim them with fluted molding, in different designs, for a more distinguished effect.
Brownstone windows are fairly expensive, compared to windows of a standard size. Supplies for the molded designs surrounding the windows can be just as costly as the window itself, in cases where a custom design is created. Not to mention the extra expense of increased labor costs resulting from difficult installation procedures.
Overall, when it comes to Brownstone windows, the costs outweigh the benefits. These windows help to create the image of a larger, brighter room with a more distinguished look and feel.
