What is a British PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)?
A PhD is a unique opportunity to undertake a substantial study that results in a written piece of work called a Thesis. The Thesis is between 80,000-100,000 words and must make an original contribution to knowledge. Specific research training and career development in-puts are also provided according to a student’s needs. In the UK, the main difference between PhD level study and Masters or Bachelors level study is that at PhD level, you are required to become an independent critical learner and thinker. Your academic supervisors will provide support, but will expect you to take the initiative to meet your own learning needs and to develop and conduct your own study. A PhD will help you to develop a range of generic skills that are transferable into many different life and work situations. By the end of a PhD, in addition to having produced a Thesis, you will be able to manage your work, time and ideas independently, and you will have developed advanced critical analysis skills. A PhD
