Betahydroxy (BHA) such as salicylic acid is used for surface exfoliators. BHA’s such as salicylic acid dissolve oil and is used for oily skin and acne. Salicylic acid is derived from sweet birch, willow bark and wintergreen. Salicylic acid also has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. They are a group of chemical preservatives with antioxidant capabilities, and also have the ability to topically exfoliate. (Aspirin is derived from salycylates).
