For the new mom, or anyone shopping for a new mom, a bassinet may be the number one choice for baby’s first bed. Originally, the bassinet was just a basket with a hood on one end that was used to shield the baby’s eyes. For some mothers the bassinet was used instead of a cradle or crib for baby’s first bed. This is because it was lightweight and easy to carry. It seemed to resemble the portable cribs of today. Many mothers found it convenient because it allowed the baby to be raised up from the floor and put on a table or even a chair. As time moved on and the needs of mothers and babies changed, the design of the bassinet changed as well. Where once it had been a basket with a hood it became a basket with a hood on a wooden stand. Bassinet is a French word that refers to a basin; to most people, a bassinet means a small, oblong-shaped bed for an infant. Most bassinets come with detachable hoods, and many bassinets come with wheels for the convenience of moving the infant crib from room to room, or with foldable legs for saving space. Some people also refer to certain types of baby carriages as bassinets. Styles of the bassinet have not changed much through the years – and that is part of their charm. Most bassinets are made of lightweight materials such as w
