A basic POST certificate is awarded to deputies and police officers that successfully complete one year of continuous service as a sworn law enforcement officer with an accredited agency in the state of California. Lateral applicants MUST have this certificate and attach a copy to their original employment application. Basic Police Academy graduates receive an academy graduation certificate. These two certificates are not the same.
