What Is a Bas-Relief Sculpture?
“Hello my name is Carlos Navarro. I’m an artist and an educator in Miami, Florida. Bas-relief sculpture is actually very beautiful. You all know what a sculpture is. A sculpture is pretty much three dimensional and you can walk around and touch it and feel it. Bas-relief sculpture is sculpture that comes from a wall approximately two, three inches away from that wall, sometimes even further out and it is literally a two dimensional, actually it is three dimensional but it almost looks like it’s two dimensional because really you can’t go around it. You are actually looking at it and it’s on a flat surface. The most famous Bas-relief sculpture in the world is in Florence. It is on walls of the Baptistry in Florence, actually it is on a door of the Baptistry in Florence and it is made out of bronze. A Bas-relief sculpture can be in bronze. It can be in jaso. It can be in copper. It can be in anything that allows an artist to carve things and bring them out but not necessarily all the way
