What is a baitcasting reel?
A baitcasting reel is mounted on the top of the fishing rod. The axle of the spool turns at a right angle to the rod, feeding line to the rod. This type of reel normally usually works best with lines of 8 pound test or larger, although there are lightweight reels that may go down to as low as 4 pound test. Larger versions can take the heaviest line weights. The most common configuration has the handle on the right side of the reel, so the handle is turned by the right hand. This would be a right hand model designation. The turning spool is controlled by thumb pressure against the line on the spool.
