WHAT IS A BAIL BOND AND WHY DO I NEED ONE?
A bail bond is a monetary guarantee that a defendant will appear in court. The amount of bond varies depending on the nature and seriousness of the crimes that the defendant is being charged with. A bail bond can be paid directly at the jail, or a bail bond agent / bondsman can place a bail bond for you. A separate bail bond would be set for each charge that the defendant has against them. For instance, if the defendant is being charged with two felony’s and two misdemeanor’s, a total of four charges, then there could be four different bail bonds that would need to be paid. Once bail has been set, a bond will need to be paid so that the defendant can be released from jail while awaiting a trial. If a detainee’s bond is not paid, s/he will remain in jail pending a trial. If the bond is too high, you can ask the Judge to consider reducing the amount. The Judge may, or may not, grant your request.
