What is a bad certificate and why is it blocking me from accessing a website?
Website certificates are designed to both encrypt the traffic between your browser and a website as well as make sure that you’re communicating with the website you intended. Included in that website certificate is a number of different pieces of information such as the web address, or URL, expiration date, and certifying authority who verified this website was actually who they said they were. If any of these pieces of information are out of synch with the site you are attempting to contact, it may be due to a malicious individual attempting to fool you into revealing your personal information to them. For example, if I access https://woodgrovebank.com and everything works fine, I can be certain that I was communicating with the valid owner of that URL. However, if that certificate is stolen or is no longer valid, that URL and website combination cannot be guaranteed to be secure.
