What is a 2+3 model?

The 2+3 option has been introduced to enable better provision for students entering the social sciences from other disciplines where substantial conversion training into the subject matter is necessary or for students where there is a significant language learning requirement to their training. In such cases outlets can put forward 2+3 programmes where the initial training comprises the normal generic and subject requirements but also includes either additional subject conversion or language training. Again, in all cases, a research training programme will not be recognised by the ESRC unless it is delivered through a course leading to a masters qualification. A well argued case will need to be made to justify a 2+3 programme.
