Analog modem 56K technology allows 28.8\33.6 modems to download at speeds close to 56k. There are two standards right now: U.S. Robotics X2 standard and Rockwell Semiconductor’s 56K FLEX. It seems the biggest difference is that the Rockwell seems to get a bit higher transfer rate than the U.S. Robotics.
