What is 5 Pin Bowling?

Just like the name sounds, 5 pin bowling is a version of bowling that is played with five pins, as opposed to ten.  Invented by Canadian Thomas F. Ryan, 5 pin is a very popular game in Canada.  In fact, most bowling alleys in Canada offer both the 5 pin version and 10 pin version of the game.

The variations between 5 pin bowling and 10 pin bowling are quite noticeable.  The ball is relatively small, about the size of a softball.  It has no holes, and it is generally weighs around three pounds.  This is a very big difference from a normal bowling ball, which weighs anywhere between eight and sixteen pounds.   The pins, which sit in a V formation at the end of the land, are also much smaller, and they are designed to move around when struck.

Just like ten bowling, the object of 5 pin bowling is to knock down all of the pins.  Of course, 5 pin bowling scoring is a little bit different.  Instead of two chances in a frame, the bowler is allotted three chances in a frame to knock down all of the pins.  The pins are not all worth the same amount of points either.  The center pin is worth five points.  The two pins on either side of it are worth three, and the outer most pins are worth two.  This makes for a total possibility of fifteen points per frame.

If the bowler rolls a strike, or knocks down all the pins, on his first throw, his score for that frame is fifteen plus the score of his next two rolls.  If the bowler knocks down all the pins on his second throw, which is known as a spare, his score for that frame is fifteen plus the score of his next roll.  If the bowler uses all three chances, his score is the total of all the pins that were knocked over.   Just like ten pin bowling, there are a total of ten frames.  A perfect game in 5 pin bowling is 450.

Five pin bowling is widely popular in Canada, and it is enjoyed by both children and adults alike.  The game is very suitable for children, because the ball is small and easy to handle.  For adults, the game offers many different strategic elements, which helps to concrete its popularity.  Throughout all of Canada, there are many local and national five pin tournaments held every year, some of which offer significant cash prizes.

Five pin bowling is an indoor sport that was invented in 1909 by Thomas F. Ryan at the Toronto Bowling Club. This is a variation on the more popular, ten pin bowling game. Both the 5 pin and ten pin bowling games are available in most bowling alleys in Canada. In 5 pin bowling, the bowling pins are 75% smaller than in ten pin. The bowling ball itself is hand-sized, completely without holes and is easy to roll. At the end of the bowling lane, five pins are arranged in a V shape. The purpose of the game is to roll the ball down the lane and knock all the pins down. Points are assigned based on the pins hit. The center pin is worth five points, the two pins on either side are worth three each, and the pins on the outside are work two each. Each player gets three attempts to knock down all five pins. Up to four people can play at one time and each player gets ten turns to obtain the highest score possible. The person with the highest score wins. 5 pin bowling was originally invented in res
