What instrument is the keyboard bass played on?
Mostly on one of the Korg synthesizers. They came out with a new model that is really dependable. We had tried a few more complex synthesizers for the bass, but it just wasn’t worth the effort. Do you try to duplicate a bass guitar sound when you double the bass? No, we didn’t go for a bass guitar sound this time around, on the last tour; we left that up to the bass player. On other tours we played only the list that called for a keyboard bass, so we’d have to emulate a real bass for certain songs, but this time the authentic bass, the bass guitar, was playing, I’d say, two-thirds of the way through the show. Rarely was it not playing, but I should say that a lot of what it was doing was augmented by synthesizer sounds. Many times they’d be playing unison lines. Why not follow the Gary Wright path and let the synthesizer take over the bass line completely?
