What innovations in cancer research funding is the American Cancer Society currently involved in?
In two separate studies, society investigators and others have identified genetic variations in “nonsense genes” that were previously overlooked, but may account for a significant proportion of the risk of prostate and other cancers. In addition, the society’s Extramural Grants program oversees the largest private, not-for-profit cancer research effort in the country. The American Cancer Society nurtures new funding programs in health policy research, an initiative that links directly to the society’s focus on ensuring access to care, and another on palliative care, based on the society mission of improving quality of life. Q: What do you see as the greatest challenge for your organization this year? Our greatest challenges are in meeting the growing needs for not only cancer patients and their families, but for everyone we serve in the fight against cancer. One of the American Cancer Society’s greatest strengths is our grass-roots volunteer support.
