What information is useful for patients with DPN?
A4: Patients with DPN need to understand that the underlying nerve damage causing the pain can lead to potentially serious consequences. Progressive nerve damage may result in loss of sensation, which can lead to injury, infection and, in some cases, to amputation.7,8 However, with the proper maintenance and control of blood glucose levels, continuing nerve damage can be minimized.6 Patients should be aware that there is currently no treatment available to reverse current or prevent further nerve damage. In addition to these efforts to prevent progression of nerve injury, patients with DPN may need pain management. They should be reassured that FDA-approved medications are now available to treat the pain associated with nerve damage due to diabetes. It should, however, be explained that these medications do not prevent further nerve damage or act to control their diabetes.
