What influence does El Nino have on Atlantic Hurricanes?
Fortunately for those along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States from Texas to Maine, El Nino occurrences have a negative impact on Atlantic Hurricanes. The warmer than normal sea surface temperatures created in the Pacific influence global climate in such a way that it makes hostile upper level wind conditions throughout the Atlantic Basin, which tend to shear the vertically stacked hurricane structure apart. An example of an El Nino year was in 1997 when there were only eight named storms.
