There are also two groups of individuals who have been excluded from compulsory coverage under the WSIA. The first group includes individuals who are excluded from the definition of a “worker” under the WSIA but who can apply for voluntary WSIB coverage, also known as “optional insurance,” if they are carrying on business in an industry included in Schedule 1 or Schedule 2.
