What impact will SNOMED CT have on the current clinical coding process?
As LSP systems develop and improve their usage of SNOMED CT then we expect the current ‘clinical coding’ processes will change. The provision of SNOMED CT-enabled clinical systems will allow detailed, terminology-based recording of clinical information at point of care, and its automated participation in many secondary functions, including transformations to specified classifications. There are cross maps from SNOMED CT to ICD-10 & OPCS-4 and we expect LSPs to use these maps to provide innovative solutions that use human interpretation effectively and maximise consistency and data quality.
