Basically, a video codec is an algorithm used to compress video data to reduce the file size, and also to decompress it for viewing (hence, the term codec). Most video files are compressed using video codecs in order to reduce file size. When a video file is compressed using a particular codec, that codec must be installed on the machine that is going to display the video.
