What impact does ethnicity have on educational achievement?
Hi Hollie, When we sort out students based on ethnicity we find a substantial difference in educational achievement across categories. Two factors stand out. One is the correlation between minority ethnicity and poverty and the other is the degree of family/community support for educational achievement. While high poverty rates are correlated with low educational achievement, there are exceptions that point to an overriding influence of parental and sub-cultural value being placed on education. So coming from a family/community that places a high value on education can trump poverty as an influence. Regards.
