What impact did Great Depression criminals like John Dillinger have in America?
John Dillinger was, in fact, quite the hero to most of the American public for most of his “career”. His good looks, joking manner, always smiling. During a robbery he was known to give the customer back his money and take the banks. People hated the banks for folding, calling in all of their loans, foreclosing and taking their property. This “crime spree” had a huge impact on law enforcement. These criminals would run to other states and the police couldn’t follow them. We had no national law enforcement that could cross states lines and had no laws to enact anything also. Officers would always find that the criminals had better cars than they did, better weapons than they did, better mobility than they did … they were constantly out done in every way. These Great Depression gangsters taught law enforcement on a local, state AND national level a great deal.
