What if the NIS master goes down, does Secure4Access go down too?

The Secure4Access slave server is capable of taking over as the NIS master server if the NIS master becomes unavailable, assuming NIS is configured to support this. If it is necessary for the slave to rebuild a map (e.g. because of a password change), it first builds a map source file from the existing map because a slave server cannot depend on map source files to be current.
