What if the card is lost or stolen?
You’ll generally get your money back as long as you report the incident promptly to the bank. Federal law limits your fraud liability. Your exposure on debit cards is limited to $50 if you report it within 48 hours and $500 if you report it within 60 days. The Direct Express card provides further protection: You have 90 days to report unauthorized transactions, and you’re not liable for more than $500. If fraud occurs and your account is in good standing, you may also owe nothing under MasterCard’s zero-liability policy.
