What if the aquifer is salty?

0

CSIRO and partners have shown it is possible to store fresh water in a saline (salty) aquifer, creating a large ‘bubble’ of fresh water which can be tapped at will. If the aquifer has a low rate of flow, this limits the mixing of injected fresh water and salty groundwater which, in practice, tends to be confined to the edges of the ‘bubble’. This has the advantage of freshening saline aquifers to make groundwater useable for irrigation, and in some cases even suitable for animals and humans to drink.
