– Sun’s owns the Java name, but I don’t think you need their permission to write a Java compiler or a JVM. See GNU and Java for a list of open-source java projects; there’s even a project to duplicate the core Java libraries. IBM is deeply involved with Java, so that means there is at least on behemoth that will be willing to keep Sun in line. i.e. this isn’t a reasonable fear.
