any social security number can be claimed as dependent only once per yr to my knowledge if its a custody thing it would depend on a court order who has the custody and rights to claim as dependent if you are the supporter of said individual and someone else claimed that dependent just fill out your papers in normal manner when the error comes up in computer itll be a fault other than yours just my opinion you

If 2 different people claim the same dependent, the IRS will catch it by the social security number being claimed twice. You will get a notice saying something like “dependent exemption denied” and they will adjust your refund accordingly. The other person claiming will probably also get a notice. You will need to prove your eligibility to claim the dependent. You can do this by showing the person lived with you, keeping receipts like groceries, clothes, doctor’s bills, etc. A good way to show the dependent’s home address is through school records.

You must file your tax return by mail with supporting documents that you are the rightful person to claim the dependent. The IRS will make a determination and – assuming you are entitled to claim the dependent they will send you the appropriate refund and go after the other person for their improper claim to get a return of the funds.
