The reason is that there are more things to consider than simply intellectual ability; emotional and spiritual maturity move at different speeds than intellectual maturity, and many of the ideas and levels of discussion in the Great Books require a bit more emotional and spiritual stability than a younger child usually has, even if they have no trouble actually reading the book.
