If you would like to remain in the U.S. beyond your required departure, you must file an application for a change of status with USCIS. Discuss this situation with the international student advisor at least one month prior to your completion of studies date. *Note: Not all J-1 students will be able to change their status within the United States. Category changes (ie from student to scholar) may also be difficult. Please consult an advisor regarding your specific case or see the change of status information on the USCIS website.
