Ordinarily, you will need to make payments each month, unless otherwise arranged. Fundamentally, a ‘Novation’ is an agreement by your employer to make payments on your behalf (from your remuneration) and not to make payments for you, per se. Your employer will ultimately determine the policy particulars.
