When you’re trying to make a movie you’re always standing back and thinking, ‘what does the whole picture look like?’. Whilst you have to get the little details right, ultimately you have to take a big step back and look at how the whole thing holds together. I wanted the picture to be complete, so my concern was always – ‘how does this all add up?’. I also thought the movie had to have a rhythm and build to something. I was lucky, my film has an emotional climax of release. My two characters, played by David Morrissey and Mark Addy, go on this very dark emotional journey, but they actually manage to end up somewhere – they save a girl. That’s a big deal. Both of them have a journey that takes them somewhere. I read the other two only after I knew what I was doing with 1983 – I actually made a point not to read the other two interestingly enough, because I didn’t want to know [what happened]. And I was shocked at how nihilistic and dark they were – there’s no hope in either of them! So
