” Oftentimes, excitement over new technology can fall victim to the realities of implementation. As we look at the transformative potential of peacekeepers armed and supported by smartphones, I anticipate a few key challenges: 1. Cost: These devices are expensive and in many cases monthly usage plans subsidize the hardware production costs. These plans are also costly. Older smartphone models are beginning to fall in price but the UN would have to weigh these costs against their existing communications and technology infrastructure. Working with regional and multinational telecom companies to discount, or donate plans, bandwidth, etc. could also make this a reality. 2. Coverage and Connectivity: Many of the regions where peacekeeping efforts take place are remote and limited in terms of their wireless, and cellular networks. However, without ubiquitous and reliable network access, peacekeepers would need to download content through docking stations and prescribed wireless zones. With e
