What if a student does not request an accommodation until late in the semester?

• Students have a responsibility to give instructors and Services for Students with Disabilities staff adequate time to arrange accommodations. SSWD staff encourage students to request early in the semester. • Instructors should announce in class and include a statment the course syllabus for students to identify themselves early in the semester. An example statement: “Any student who may need an accommodation due to a disability, please make an appointment to see me during my office hours. A VISA from Services for Students with Disabilities authorizing your accommodations will be needed.” • Once a student has identified to the instructor and requests accommodations authorized by SSWD, the instructor has a legal responsibility to make reasonable attempts to accommodate the need, even late in the semester. There is no responsibility to provide accommodations retroactively. • Instructors should feel free to contact SSWD for assistance on arrangements for last-minute requests.
