What if a Pap smear comes back abnormal? Will the program pay for follow-up testing and treatment, if needed?
The Women’s Health Program does not cover diagnostic tests or treatment services for women with suspected cervical or breast cancer. If further diagnostic or treatment services are determined appropriate, a woman must be referred to a primary care or specialty provider; otherwise, other funding sources must be utilized. If you provide Women’s Health Program services to a woman who has an abnormal Pap smear or clinical breast exam, based on clinical protocols it may be appropriate to refer her to the DSHS Breast and Cervical Cancer Program.
