After starting his career at Hertfordshire club Watford in nineteen eighty one, John Barnes helped the Hornets enjoy their greatest ever period of success. The following season (eighty eight, eighty nine), the reverse happened, with the reds finishing runners up in the league to Arsenal, but defeating neighbours Everton in the nineteen eighty nine FA cup final three, two. Another league title followed in nineteen ninety, before his final honour as a player in the league cup of ninety five.
