What historical factors helped Australia shape its sport today?
It’s no more devoted to sport than any other country. In the US, I’m pretty sure students get scholarships to college due to high school success in sport – we don’t do that in Australia. When the US is juxtaposed with Australia in relation to sport, I’d say the US would have a stronger dedication. I went to a basketball game in the US last year and was astounded at how extravagant it was and how many people turned up. Australia does not have much of an inspiring history – no offence. And if you haven’t noticed, we’re sorta detached from the rest of the world. We pride ourselves on our commonwealth, and participate in the sport introduced here – rugby, cricket, tennis etc. We’re girt by water, so we’re forced to take swimming lessons in primary school. We don’t have much of an inspirational history, with memorable heroes, so we do what we can. Sport is a good start.
