An interesting fact about her life is that because of a difficult delivery, the doctor had to use forceps to pull the baby from the birth canal, and in the process injured her scalp. The doctor told the nurse to let Melba’s mother know that cleaning the wound with warm water and Epsom salts would prevent infection. However, the nurse failed to give the mother that information. Because her father worked for the railroad, Melba’s mother was allowed to give birth at the whites only hospital for railroad workers. Even after the baby’s wound developed a severe infection, the nurs
