What high school courses should I take if I want to become a music video director?
Unless you attend a performing arts high school or a school that has a media department chances are you won’t find video production or broadcasting classes at your high school. You don’t need any college degree to be a music video director. You need talent, experience and an artistic eye for story composition. Most music video directors started making home movies at the age of 13 with their consumer cameras and home editing equipment. Start making videos for your school or friends and post it on YouTube. It is very difficult to make a steady career as a video director. Most are freelance so that means you don’t get any benefits (medical, 401k, pension etc) unless you’re in the union. Working behind the scenes usually requires you to start off as a production assistant for a local or public TV station making minimum wage. You can work your way up and if you’re talented someone might give you a shot at directing. College programs are geared for film school, acting, screenwriting etc. THe
