Heparin concentrations vary by institution. The most common concentration according to K-DOQI Guidelines is 5000U/cc and in most cases this is successful. Be sure to refer to the priming volume on the catheter for the appropriate fill volume and always use those concentrations approved by your facility. In all cases, the patient’s condition must be considered when choosing a heparin regime. Use less heparin in children and in adults with bleeding disorders. Always defer to physician experience and judgment in treating any specific patient.
