What hens are the most broody?
ahem… mine! I have 14 banties and 9 are broody! My cousin has some eggs under the pair of buff rocks they are very good sitters. Our best sitter was a barbe d’ucle which was thrown over our gate one day, she was a great mum too. Every hen we have has gone broody at some point, and they have all hatched their own chicks now as well. I have heard silkies are good as they are so soft and fluffy. Pekins have sharp feathers on their legs and have been known to damage chicks unknowingly. One of my Wyandottes is going to sit on some duck eggs for me soon. You have to test the hens to see if they are really broody, I have a half dozen china eggs for dummy testing, if they sit on those for a week then they are usually daffy enough to suit the whole time. We always hatch in pairs if one hen gets off, you can usually put the eggs under no 2.
