What helped the unification of Italy in 1861?
Garibaldi was the main help to the unification, because it was his military flair that helped the Carbonari keep control over the more unruly Italian states. But as Garibaldi and his revolutionaries were working from the northern states downwards, the economic and technological inbalance between Piedmont and the Sicilian/Papal states meant that defending forces would be fending off military rifles with crude melee weapons and inefficient guns. Add this to the fact that many elements within the more traditionalist regimes of the south were desperate for modern reform, so often lent their support to the Carbonari.
